I came to Mr Shah in January with a sports-related knee injury. He diagnosed the problem, came up with alternatives, and treated me in an adult manner by listening to my questions and providing considered answers. He carried out the operation on a Friday evening, a time chosen by me to accommodate work commitments. The operation and post-operative care were carried out without incident and the minimum of fuss. Mr Shah is a pleasure to work with - courteous and professional.

I was referred to Mr Shah by my local NHS consultant who considered the surgery I required on my hip to be so complex that a specialist surgeon was required. Although I was grateful for the local consultant to admit to his limitations, I was initially disappointed to discover that I was to be referred to Guys Hospital in London, which is some distance from my home. However, I am now extremely grateful for the referral to Mr Shah who I believe is an excellent surgeon. As well as his medical expertise, he is also very personable and a great communicator. My surgery took place at the end of July 2014 and due to the complex nature of the surgery I required a lengthy recovery period. From the initial consultation I had with Mr Shah, through to my recent 6 monthly check up, I have received excellent treatment from a consultant who is both clearly medically gifted and emotionally intelligent. It is likely that I will require further surgery in the future and even if this could be accommodated locally, I will be requesting Mr Shah as my surgeon as I have total confidence in him.

I am writing this in relation to my experience of the fracture clinic at Guys hospital in London where I was treated by Mr. Shah after sustaining a grade three acromioclavicula dislocation whilst on holiday in Jamaica. After having an initial consultation with Mr. Shah about possible treatment options I opted for surgery to correct my injury and I was booked in to be operated on the following week. The date of my scheduled operation was not a pleasant day for me and to summarise what happened I will say this. I arrived, as advised at 7am and waited on the Surgical Admissions Lounge for over two hours after having been told that I was not on the admissions list. After much waiting around, I was advised that due to a miscommunication I would not be having my operation that day. Of course I was extremely disappointed and frustrated. I had built myself up to have the operation that day and made arrangements with work, university and friends and family on the basis that I was being operated on. However, notwithstanding my initial feelings of dissatisfaction, there is something more pertinent that I wish to say. When I had my initial appointment with Mr. Shah in the fracture clinic he was attentive, receptive and very friendly. I felt comfortable talking to him about my injury, treatment options and concerns and even though he had seen a great deal of people before me, he still took the time to go through everything thoroughly. Furthermore, he wrote me a handwritten letter there and then explaining my injury, the date of my operation and expected recovery period for me to pass on to my employer and university which was, in my opinion, going above and beyond. I instantly warmed to him as a practitioner and felt very safe in his hands. In addition, after hearing about what had happened that day of my scheduled operation Mr. Shah called me personally to apologise and explain exactly why the operation being cancelled. Again, this was going above and beyond. It is for all of the above reasons that I write this not to complain but to emphasise my appreciation for the handling of what can only be described as an unfortunate incident that arose out of an innocent mistake. I know from talking to Mr. Shah that the reason for the change in date in the first place was that he was trying to get me the best care possible and that because I am young and because the injury was to my dominant shoulder, he wanted to minimise the impact of surgery and chances of being left with an unsightly scar. It was a stressful time for me, having to take unpaid leave from work and missing an exam that will impact on my future career. However, the NHS must take it as a testament that their brilliance has prevailed in a situation like this. After sustaining my injury in Jamaica and being in hospital over there, I felt very grateful that I was able to come home and be treated by Mr. Shah.
